Anti‑Discrimination Policy
Centering Connection, Equity, and Care
The Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) is committed to cultivating a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment for all individuals engaged in our work. In alignment with Texas Christian University’s non‑discrimination and equal opportunity policies, KPICD does not discriminate in its programs, activities, trainings, research, or partnerships.
Trust‑Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®)
Trust‑Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is an evidence‑based, trauma‑informed intervention designed to meet the complex needs of individuals who have experienced relational trauma. Grounded in attachment science and neuroscience research, TBRI® is organized around three sets of principles:
- Empowering Principles that address physical and self‑regulation needs
- Connecting Principles that address relational and attachment needs
- Correcting Principles that address fear‑based behavioral needs
Because TBRI® is a principles‑based approach, it is effective across cultures and applicable in virtually any community, system of care, or practice setting.
Originally developed for use with adoptive families, TBRI® is now implemented worldwide in a wide range of contexts, including but not limited to:
- Residential treatment facilities
- Institutional care (e.g., orphanages)
- Courts
- Schools
- Care communities for survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation
- Juvenile justice systems
- Biological families
- Law enforcement
- Child welfare agencies
- Foster care systems
Commitment to Inclusion and Equity
Because TBRI® is designed to meet the basic human need for connection, KPICD affirms that TBRI® can — and should — be applied inclusively. KPICD is committed to ensuring access to and participation in our work regardless of an individual’s:
- Age
- Race or color
- Religion
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Gender, gender identity, or gender expression
- National or ethnic origin
- Disability
- Or any other status protected by applicable law
TBRI® is not a faith‑based intervention. KPICD welcomes individuals and organizations serving children and families across all belief systems and backgrounds to engage with TBRI® as a path toward healing, connection, and permanency.
Accessibility and Accommodations
KPICD is committed to ensuring that its programs, services, trainings, and resources are accessible to all individuals. We strive to provide reasonable accommodations and to remove barriers to participation whenever possible.
Individuals who require accommodations related to a disability or access need are encouraged to contact KPICD to discuss available options.
Applicability
This policy applies to all KPICD employees, faculty, staff, contractors, affiliates, trainers, researchers, trainees, and participants involved in KPICD‑sponsored or KPICD‑affiliated activities.
